Serology

Serology testing focuses on the detection and identification of antibodies—proteins produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection or other disease processes. By analyzing a patient’s blood for the presence of specific antibodies, these tests help determine whether an individual has been exposed to, or is currently fighting, a particular infection.

Serology is commonly used to aid in the diagnosis of illnesses such as mononucleosis, rheumatic fever, and other immune-related or infectious diseases. It can also be used to assess a patient’s immune status—for example, determining immunity following vaccination or prior infection.

Through precise testing and interpretation, serology provides clinicians with important information that supports accurate diagnosis, guides treatment, and contributes to a better understanding of a patient’s immune response.
